Kodiak, Alaska
Kodiak, Alaska, is a vibrant coastal city steeped in history and surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. Originally settled by Russian explorers in the 18th century, the city still reflects its Russian heritage through its architecture, culture, and historic sites. Visitors can learn about the fascinating story of the Russian American Ice Company — a business that profited not by selling ice, but by strategically controlling its distribution — offering a glimpse into the island’s unique economic past.
During World War II, Kodiak served as a critical military base in the North Pacific and even endured a Japanese attack in 1942. The island played host to the hidden soldiers of Long Island, a little-known chapter of wartime defense in Alaska. In the years that followed, Kodiak’s economy blossomed with the rise of Cannery Row, a bustling hub for the fishing industry that remains central to the island’s identity.
The 1964 Good Friday Earthquake — one of the most powerful ever recorded — brought significant destruction to the region, reshaping the landscape and strengthening the resilience of the local community.
Today, Kodiak is known for its thriving wildlife, dramatic coastlines, and deep-rooted fishing traditions. Whether you're drawn by history, nature, or the promise of adventure, Kodiak offers an unforgettable experience unlike anywhere else in Alaska.

Whale Watching Times of the Year
May – September: Prime Whale-Watching Season
Spring through early fall is the best time to experience the rich marine life around Kodiak. Humpback whale pods arrive with new calves, feeding actively in local waters. Massive fin whales gather in Marmot Bay, drawn by krill and small fish, while gray whales pass through by the hundreds during their early May migration. Although orcas and porpoises are more elusive, they’re occasionally spotted during this season — always a thrilling surprise!
October – March: A Quiet, Magical Winter
While the weather and shorter days make this time of year more challenging, winter still offers its own rewards. A few adolescent humpbacks linger into the colder months, especially on the island’s east side, where they feed on herring in late winter. Fin whales remain in Marmot Bay, reliably feeding throughout the season. And if luck is on our side, orcas and porpoises might make a rare appearance. No matter the weather, a cozy cabin and the quiet beauty of winter make for a truly special adventure.

Bird Watching Times of the Year
May – September: Migratory Bird Season
Kodiak is a birdwatcher’s paradise during the warmer months. From May through September, migratory birds arrive from across the globe: puffins and petrels from the Southern Hemisphere, including New Zealand and Australia, and sleek Arctic terns that journey all the way from Antarctica. Their return marks a vibrant and noisy season full of life. Coastal cliffs and open waters become stage and sky for dramatic displays, while meadows and shorelines fill with song and color.
Year-Round: A Haven for Resident Birds
Even in the quiet of winter, Kodiak offers impressive birdlife. Dozens of species stick around all year — gulls wheel above the shoreline, ducks paddle through icy bays, and hardy auklets dot the rocky coasts. No matter the season, there's always something to see and hear in the wild skies of Kodiak.
